Natalie Leggett is a renowned classical music artist who has made a name for herself as a violinist, concertmaster, and chamber musician. Born on August 7, 1960, in Los Angeles, California, Leggett grew up in a family of musicians. Her father, Louie Leggett, was a jazz pianist, and her mother, Betty Leggett, was a classical pianist. From a young age, Leggett showed a keen interest in music and began playing the violin at the age of four. Leggett's early musical education was under the tutelage of her mother, who was a strict disciplinarian. She was trained in the Suzuki method, which emphasizes the importance of ear training and learning by imitation. Leggett's talent was evident from an early age, and she quickly progressed through the Suzuki repertoire. At the age of ten, Leggett began studying with renowned violinist and pedagogue Robert Lipsett at the Colburn School of Performing Arts in Los Angeles. Lipsett recognized Leggett's exceptional talent and took her under his wing, providing her with rigorous training and guidance. Under Lipsett's tutelage, Leggett developed a deep understanding of the technical and musical aspects of violin playing. Leggett's talent and hard work paid off when she won the prestigious Young Musicians Foundation Debut Concerto Competition at the age of 14. This was a significant achievement for Leggett, as the competition was open to musicians under the age of 18 and was highly competitive. The win brought Leggett to the attention of the classical music world and marked the beginning of her professional career. After completing her studies at the Colburn School, Leggett went on to attend the Juilliard School in New York City, where she studied with Dorothy DeLay. DeLay was one of the most influential violin teachers of the 20th century and had a profound impact on Leggett's playing. Under DeLay's guidance, Leggett honed her technique and developed a deep understanding of the emotional and expressive aspects of music. Leggett's career as a professional musician began in earnest when she joined the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra as a first violinist in 1982. She quickly rose through the ranks and was appointed concertmaster of the orchestra in 1989. As concertmaster, Leggett was responsible for leading the orchestra and playing the solo violin parts in concertos and other works. Leggett's tenure as concertmaster of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra was marked by numerous highlights and achievements. She played a key role in the orchestra's critically acclaimed recordings of the complete Mozart violin concertos, which were released on the Delos label in 1991. The recordings were praised for their technical precision and emotional depth, and they helped to establish Leggett as one of the leading violinists of her generation. In addition to her work with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Leggett has also had a successful career as a chamber musician. She has performed with some of the most renowned chamber ensembles in the world, including the Emerson String Quartet, the Guarneri String Quartet, and the Tokyo String Quartet. Leggett's chamber music performances have been praised for their sensitivity, musicality, and technical brilliance. Leggett's talent and hard work have been recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout her career. In 1990, she was awarded the Coleman Chamber Music Award, which is given annually to outstanding young chamber ensembles.
