John Scanlon was born on May 12, 1985, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a professional pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, Scanlon showed a natural talent for music, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion. Scanlon began his formal music education at the age of six, when he started taking piano lessons with his father. He quickly progressed and by the age of ten, he was already performing in public concerts. At the age of twelve, he started studying the violin, and within a year, he was playing in the school orchestra. In 1999, Scanlon was accepted into the Juilliard School's Pre-College Division, where he studied both piano and violin. He continued to excel in both instruments, and by the time he graduated in 2003, he had won numerous awards and competitions. After completing his studies at Juilliard, Scanlon went on to attend the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he focused on the violin. He studied under the tutelage of renowned violinists such as Aaron Rosand and Ida Kavafian. During his time at Curtis, Scanlon continued to win awards and competitions, including the prestigious Philadelphia Orchestra Albert M. Greenfield Student Competition. In 2007, Scanlon graduated from Curtis with a Bachelor of Music degree in violin performance. He then went on to pursue a Master of Music degree at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. While at NEC, Scanlon studied under the guidance of James Buswell and Miriam Fried. He also had the opportunity to perform with the Boston Symphony Orchestra as a substitute violinist. After completing his studies at NEC in 2009, Scanlon began his professional career as a violinist. He quickly established himself as a sought-after soloist and chamber musician, performing in major concert halls around the world. Some of his most notable performances include his debut at Carnegie Hall in 2011, where he performed the Brahms Violin Concerto with the New York Philharmonic, and his performance of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra in 2014. Scanlon has also been recognized for his talent and achievements in the music industry. In 2010, he was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is given to outstanding young musicians who show great potential for a major career in music. He was also a recipient of the prestigious Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship in 2013, which provides financial support and career guidance to exceptional young musicians. In addition to his solo career, Scanlon is also an active chamber musician. He has performed with some of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Emerson String Quartet and the Guarneri Quartet. He is also a founding member of the Scanlon Quartet, which has received critical acclaim for their performances and recordings. Scanlon is known for his passionate and expressive playing style, as well as his technical virtuosity.
