Born on August 22, 1963, in Helsinki, Finland, Niemelä showed an early interest in music and began playing the cello at the age of six. He studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where he received his diploma in cello performance in 1986. After completing his studies, Niemelä began his career as a cellist, performing with various orchestras in Finland and abroad. He quickly gained recognition for his virtuosic playing and was invited to perform as a soloist with many prestigious orchestras, including the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition to his work as a cellist, Niemelä also developed a passion for conducting.
