Ensemble Villanella is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1997 in the Netherlands. The ensemble is known for its unique blend of early music and contemporary music, and its performances have been praised for their virtuosity and musicality. The founding members of Ensemble Villanella were recorder player Erik Bosgraaf and harpsichordist Francesco Corti. Both musicians had a passion for early music and were interested in exploring new ways to interpret and perform this repertoire. They were soon joined by other musicians, including violinist Sayuri Yamagata, cellist Lucia Swarts, and percussionist Ramon Lormans. Over the years, Ensemble Villanella has performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and festivals, including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Wigmore Hall in London, and the Festival Oude Muziek in Utrecht. The ensemble has also collaborated with many renowned musicians, including soprano Johannette Zomer, tenor Marcel Beekman, and baritone Maarten Koningsberger. One of the highlights of Ensemble Villanella's career was their performance of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam in 2006. The ensemble's interpretation of these iconic works was praised for its energy, precision, and musicality. The performance was also recorded and released on CD, which received critical acclaim and was nominated for several awards. Another notable performance by Ensemble Villanella was their collaboration with the Dutch National Ballet in 2010. The ensemble provided live music for a performance of the ballet "The Four Seasons," which was choreographed by Hans van Manen. The performance was a huge success and was praised for its seamless integration of music and dance. Ensemble Villanella has also been recognized for their recordings, which have received numerous awards and nominations. In 2012, the ensemble's recording of Vivaldi's "La Cetra" was awarded the Diapason d'Or, one of the most prestigious awards in the classical music industry. The ensemble's recording of Bach's "Goldberg Variations" was also highly acclaimed and was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2014. In addition to their performances and recordings, Ensemble Villanella is also committed to education and outreach. The ensemble regularly gives masterclasses and workshops for young musicians, and they have also developed educational programs for schools and community organizations. Through these initiatives, the ensemble hopes to inspire the next generation of musicians and music lovers. Today, Ensemble Villanella continues to be one of the most respected and innovative ensembles in the classical music world. With their unique blend of early and contemporary music, their virtuosic performances, and their commitment to education and outreach, the ensemble is sure to continue making an impact for years to come.
