She was born on February 2, 1925, in Detroit, Michigan, to a wealthy family. Her father was a businessman, and her mother was a homemaker. Stritch grew up in a privileged environment and attended private schools. Stritch showed an early interest in performing and began taking dance lessons at a young age. She later studied acting at the New School for Social Research in New York City. In 1944, she made her Broadway debut in the musical "Angel in the Wings." She went on to appear in several other Broadway productions, including "Call Me Madam," "Pal Joey," and "Sail Away." In 1955, Stritch won a Tony Award for her performance in the musical "Company." She also received Tony nominations for her work in "Bus Stop," "Sail Away," and "A Delicate Balance." Stritch was known for her powerful voice and her ability to convey emotion through her performances. In addition to her work on Broadway, Stritch also appeared in several films and television shows. She had a recurring role on the television series "30 Rock," for which she won an Emmy Award in 2007. She also appeared in films such as "A Farewell to Arms" and "September." Throughout her career, Stritch struggled with alcoholism and other personal issues. She was known for her outspoken personality and her willingness to speak her mind. She was also known for her close friendship with composer Stephen Sondheim, with whom she collaborated on several projects. Stritch continued to perform well into her 80s, despite health issues.
