Born on November 5, 1963, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, McArdle grew up in a family of performers. Her mother was a singer, and her father was a comedian. From a young age, McArdle showed a keen interest in music and theatre, and her parents encouraged her to pursue her passion. McArdle's first major breakthrough came in 1977 when she was cast as the lead in the Broadway production of "Annie." McArdle was just 13 years old at the time, and her performance as the plucky orphan won her critical acclaim and a Tony Award nomination.
