His father, Ira Strouse, was a pianist and composer, while his mother, Ethel Newman Strouse, was a singer and actress. From a young age, Strouse showed a keen interest in music and began taking piano lessons at the age of six. Strouse's early musical education was primarily focused on classical music. He studied at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, where he received a Bachelor of Music degree in 1947. He then went on to study at the Yale School of Music, where he earned a Master of Music degree in 1950. After completing his studies, Strouse began his career as a composer, working primarily in the field of musical theater. His first major success came in 1960 with the production of "Bye Bye Birdie," a musical comedy that was based on the phenomenon of Elvis Presley and his impact on American teenagers. The show was a huge hit and won four Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Following the success of "Bye Bye Birdie," Strouse went on to compose a number of other successful musicals, including "Applause" (1970), which was based on the film "All About Eve" and starred Lauren Bacall, and "Annie" (1977), which was based on the comic strip "Little Orphan Annie" and became one of the most successful musicals of all time. In addition to his work in musical theater, Strouse has also composed a number of classical works, including a symphony, a piano concerto, and a number of chamber works.
