Carol Channing was an American actress, singer, and comedian who was best known for her work in musical theater. She was born on January 31, 1921, in Seattle, Washington, to George and Adelaide Channing. Her father was a journalist and her mother was a pianist and singer. Channing grew up in San Francisco and attended Lowell High School, where she was a member of the drama club. Channing's interest in performing began at an early age. She started taking dance lessons when she was just three years old and began performing in local theater productions when she was in high school. After graduating, she attended Bennington College in Vermont, where she studied drama and dance. Channing's big break came in 1949 when she was cast as Lorelei Lee in the Broadway production of "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes." The show was a huge success and Channing's performance earned her critical acclaim. She went on to star in several other Broadway productions, including "Hello, Dolly!" and "Thoroughly Modern Millie." Channing's performance in "Hello, Dolly!" was particularly memorable. She played the lead role of Dolly Gallagher Levi and won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. The show ran for over 2,800 performances and became one of the most successful musicals in Broadway history. In addition to her work on Broadway, Channing also appeared in several films and television shows. She had a recurring role on the TV series "The Love Boat" and appeared in films such as "Thoroughly Modern Millie" and "Skidoo." Channing was known for her distinctive voice and comedic timing. She often played larger-than-life characters and was known for her ability to make audiences laugh. She was also a talented singer and recorded several albums throughout her career. Channing received numerous awards and honors throughout her career. In addition to her Tony Award, she was also inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Tony Awards.
