He was the youngest of six children and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist, and they both encouraged their children to pursue music. Delogu began his musical training at a young age, studying the violin and piano with his parents. He showed exceptional talent and was soon performing in public concerts. At the age of 12, he was accepted into the Conservatory of Cagliari, where he continued his studies in violin and piano. In 1948, Delogu moved to Rome to study at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, one of the most prestigious music schools in Italy. He studied under the guidance of renowned violinists such as Remy Principe and Alfredo Casella. During his time at the academy, Delogu also studied composition and conducting, which would later become important aspects of his career. After completing his studies, Delogu began his professional career as a violinist, performing with various orchestras in Italy and Europe. He quickly gained a reputation as a virtuoso performer, known for his technical skill and emotional depth. In 1955, he was appointed as the concertmaster of the Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma, a position he held for several years. In the 1960s, Delogu began to focus more on conducting, and he quickly established himself as a talented and innovative conductor. He was appointed as the principal conductor of the Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma in 1965, and he held this position for several years. During this time, he also conducted many other orchestras in Italy and Europe, including the London Symphony Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic. One of the highlights of Delogu's career was his performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma in 1970. This performance was widely acclaimed and cemented Delogu's reputation as one of the leading conductors of his generation. He went on to conduct many other important works, including symphonies by Brahms, Tchaikovsky, and Mahler. In addition to his work as a conductor, Delogu was also a prolific composer. Some of his most famous works include the opera "Il Canto della Terra" and the "Concerto for Violin and Orchestra." He was also awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 1980, and he was made a Knight of the Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity in 1990.
