Eclipse Chamber Orchestra is a classical music ensemble based in Washington, D.C. The orchestra was founded in 1992 by conductor Sylvia Alimena, who remains its artistic director to this day. The ensemble is known for its innovative programming and commitment to performing works by living composers. The orchestra's core membership consists of 34 musicians, including strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. Many of the musicians are also members of other prominent orchestras in the D.C. area, such as the National Symphony Orchestra and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Eclipse Chamber Orchestra has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the United States, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Library of Congress. The orchestra has also toured internationally, performing in countries such as Italy, Spain, and China. One of the highlights of Eclipse Chamber Orchestra's career was its performance at the 2009 Inaugural Ball for President Barack Obama. The orchestra performed a program of American music, including works by Aaron Copland and George Gershwin. In addition to its live performances, Eclipse Chamber Orchestra has also released several recordings. Its debut album, "American Voices," was released in 2005 and features works by American composers such as Samuel Barber and Leonard Bernstein. The orchestra's most recent album, "The Art of the Chamber Orchestra," was released in 2018 and features works by Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert. Eclipse Chamber Orchestra has received numerous awards and accolades throughout its career. In 2010, the orchestra was awarded the Mayor's Arts Award for Excellence in an Artistic Discipline by the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities. The orchestra has also been recognized for its commitment to new music, receiving the ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming in 2012 and 2013. One of the unique aspects of Eclipse Chamber Orchestra is its commitment to performing works by living composers. The orchestra has commissioned and premiered works by composers such as Jennifer Higdon, Michael Daugherty, and Mason Bates. In 2016, the orchestra premiered a new work by composer and conductor André Previn, who passed away in 2019. Eclipse Chamber Orchestra is also committed to music education and outreach. The orchestra regularly performs for school groups and offers educational programs for students of all ages. In 2017, the orchestra launched a new program called "Music for All," which provides free concerts for underserved communities in the D.C. area. Overall, Eclipse Chamber Orchestra has established itself as one of the premier classical music ensembles in the United States.
