John Dalley is a renowned classical music artist who has made a significant contribution to the world of music. He was born on August 22, 1940, in New York City, United States. From a young age, Dalley showed a keen interest in music, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion. Dalley began his musical journey by learning to play the violin at the age of six. He was a natural talent and quickly progressed in his studies. He attended the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, where he received his Bachelor of Music degree. He then went on to study at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he received his Master of Music degree. After completing his studies, Dalley began his professional career as a violinist. He joined the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in 1964 and played with them for two years. He then joined the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1966, where he played as a first violinist for 37 years. During his time with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Dalley performed in numerous concerts and recordings, including the orchestra's Grammy Award-winning recording of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5. In addition to his work with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Dalley was also a founding member of the Muir String Quartet. The quartet was formed in 1979 and consisted of Dalley on violin, Peter Zazofsky on violin, Steven Ansell on viola, and Michael Reynolds on cello. The Muir String Quartet quickly gained recognition for their exceptional performances and recordings. They won the Naumburg Chamber Music Award in 1981 and were the first American string quartet to win the prestigious Evian International String Quartet Competition in 1982. The Muir String Quartet went on to perform in major concert halls around the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Royal Festival Hall in London. They also recorded numerous albums, including the complete string quartets of Beethoven, Brahms, and Schubert. In addition to his work with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Muir String Quartet, Dalley was also a sought-after soloist and chamber musician. He performed with many renowned musicians, including Yo-Yo Ma, Emanuel Ax, and Richard Stoltzman. He also performed at major music festivals, including the Marlboro Music Festival and the Tanglewood Music Festival. Throughout his career, Dalley received numerous awards and honors for his exceptional performances and contributions to the world of music. In 1995, he was awarded the Harvard Musical Association's Arthur W. Foote Award for his outstanding contributions to chamber music. He was also awarded the Boston Symphony Orchestra's Erich Leinsdorf Award in 2003 for his exceptional contributions to the orchestra. After retiring from the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 2003, Dalley continued to perform and teach. He joined the faculty of the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where he taught violin and chamber music. He also continued to perform as a soloist and chamber musician, and he remained an active member of the music community until his passing in 2020.
