Merseburger Hofmusik is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1990 in Merseburg, Germany. The ensemble is known for its performances of Baroque music, particularly the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. The founding members of Merseburger Hofmusik were the conductor and harpsichordist Michael Schönheit, the violinist Susanne Scholz, and the cellist Michael Metzler. The ensemble was named after the Merseburg Palace, where the musicians first met and began playing together. Merseburger Hofmusik quickly gained a reputation for its high-quality performances of Baroque music. The ensemble's focus on historically informed performance practices, including the use of period instruments and techniques, set it apart from other classical music groups. One of the highlights of Merseburger Hofmusik's early years was its performance of Bach's St. John Passion in 1992. The ensemble's interpretation of the piece was praised for its clarity and emotional depth. The performance was recorded and released on CD, further cementing Merseburger Hofmusik's reputation as a leading interpreter of Baroque music. Over the years, Merseburger Hofmusik has performed at many prestigious venues and festivals around the world. The ensemble has also collaborated with other leading musicians and ensembles, including the soprano Emma Kirkby and the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra. In addition to its live performances, Merseburger Hofmusik has released several critically acclaimed recordings. These include recordings of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos, Handel's Water Music, and Telemann's Tafelmusik. Merseburger Hofmusik has received numerous awards and accolades for its performances and recordings. In 1996, the ensemble was awarded the Echo Klassik award for its recording of Bach's St. Matthew Passion. The ensemble has also been nominated for several other Echo Klassik awards over the years. In 2010, Merseburger Hofmusik celebrated its 20th anniversary with a special concert at the Merseburg Palace. The concert featured a program of Baroque music, including works by Bach, Handel, and Telemann. The event was attended by many of the ensemble's fans and supporters, as well as local dignitaries and cultural figures. Today, Merseburger Hofmusik continues to be one of the leading ensembles in the world of Baroque music.
