He was raised in a family of musicians, and his father was a conductor and composer. Viala began his musical training at a young age, studying piano and singing in a choir. He later attended the Conservatoire de Marseille, where he studied voice with Pierre Bernac. Viala made his professional debut in 1975, singing the role of Tamino in Mozart's "The Magic Flute" at the Opéra de Marseille. He quickly gained recognition for his beautiful voice and expressive performances, and he soon began to receive invitations to perform at major opera houses around the world. One of Viala's most notable performances was his portrayal of Don Ottavio in Mozart's "Don Giovanni" at the Royal Opera House in London in 1984. His performance was widely praised for its elegance and sensitivity, and it helped to establish him as one of the leading tenors of his generation. Viala also had a successful career as a concert singer, performing with many of the world's leading orchestras and conductors. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of French art songs, and he recorded several albums of this repertoire. Throughout his career, Viala received many awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1986, he was awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government, and in 1992, he was named a Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur. Viala continued to perform and record until his retirement in 2008. He passed away on August 23, 2017, at the age of 66.
