He was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a renowned violinist. From a young age, Genetay showed a keen interest in music, and he began playing the piano at the age of six. He was a prodigious talent, and his parents recognized his potential early on. Genetay's parents encouraged him to pursue a career in music, and he began studying at the Conservatoire de Lyon at the age of ten. He studied under some of the most renowned teachers in France, including Pierre Sancan and Jean-Claude Pennetier. Genetay was a dedicated student, and he spent countless hours practicing and perfecting his craft. In 1966, Genetay won first prize at the Conservatoire de Lyon, and he went on to study at the Conservatoire de Paris. He continued to excel in his studies, and he won several awards and accolades during his time there. In 1970, he won first prize at the International Piano Competition in Geneva, Switzerland, which launched his career as a professional musician. Genetay quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented pianists of his generation. He was known for his technical proficiency, his musicality, and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. He performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States, and he collaborated with some of the most renowned conductors and orchestras in the world. One of Genetay's most memorable performances was his debut at the Carnegie Hall in New York City in 1972. He performed a program of works by Chopin, Debussy, and Ravel, and he received a standing ovation from the audience. The New York Times praised his performance, calling him "a pianist of extraordinary talent and sensitivity." Genetay continued to perform and record throughout the 1970s and 1980s, and he released several critically acclaimed albums. He was particularly known for his interpretations of the works of Chopin, Debussy, and Ravel, and he was considered one of the foremost interpreters of French piano music. In addition to his performing career, Genetay was also a dedicated teacher. He taught at the Conservatoire de Paris for many years, and he mentored several generations of young pianists. He was known for his rigorous teaching style, and he demanded the highest standards from his students. Genetay received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1985, he was awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in recognition of his contributions to the arts.
