He was born on August 22, 1943, in Newark, New Jersey, to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Maull grew up in a musical environment and started playing the piano at the age of four. He later learned to play the violin and the viola. Maull attended the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, where he studied conducting with Jean Morel and composition with Vincent Persichetti. He also studied at the Aspen Music Festival and School in Colorado, where he worked with Leonard Bernstein and Gunther Schuller. Maull began his career as a conductor in 1968, when he founded the Philharmonic Orchestra of New Jersey. He served as the music director of the orchestra for over 30 years, during which time he conducted over 1,000 concerts. Maull also served as the music director of the New Jersey Youth Symphony from 1973 to 1986. In addition to his work as a conductor, Maull is also an educator. He founded the Discovery Orchestra in 1987, a non-profit organization dedicated to teaching audiences how to listen to classical music. The Discovery Orchestra offers educational programs for schools, community groups, and individuals. Maull also teaches conducting at the Juilliard School of Music. Maull has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1995, he was awarded the Governor's Award in Arts Education by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. In 2001, he received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Juilliard School of Music. In 2010, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Maull has conducted many notable performances throughout his career. In 1986, he conducted the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony at Carnegie Hall in New York City. In 1990, he conducted the orchestra in a performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 2 at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. In 2003, he conducted the orchestra in a performance of Brahms' Symphony No. 1 at the State Theatre in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Maull is also known for his work as a commentator and host for classical music programs on television and radio. He has hosted programs for PBS, NPR, and WQXR in New York City. He is known for his ability to explain complex musical concepts in a way that is accessible to audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Maull continues to be an active conductor, educator, and advocate for classical music. He is dedicated to teaching audiences how to listen to classical music and to promoting the importance of music education in schools.
