He was the youngest of three children and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist, so it was no surprise that Willy showed an interest in music from a young age. Willy began his musical education at the age of six when he started taking piano lessons. He quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument and progressed rapidly. By the time he was ten, he had already given his first public performance, playing a Mozart piano concerto with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1933, when Willy was just twelve years old, his family moved to Berlin, Germany, where he continued his musical education. He studied piano with the renowned pianist and composer, Artur Schnabel, and composition with Paul Hindemith. During this time, Willy also began to develop an interest in conducting, and he started to study with Wilhelm Furtwängler. In 1939, Willy's family moved back to Vienna, and he continued his studies at the Vienna Academy of Music. He graduated in 1943 with a degree in piano performance and composition. During this time, he also began to establish himself as a performer, giving numerous concerts throughout Austria and Germany. After the end of World War II, Willy moved to the United States, where he continued to pursue his career as a pianist and conductor. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented and versatile musician, and he was in demand as a soloist, chamber musician, and conductor. One of the highlights of Willy's career was his performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in 1952. The performance was widely acclaimed, and Willy was praised for his virtuosic playing and sensitive interpretation of the music. In addition to his work as a pianist, Willy was also an accomplished conductor. He conducted many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the music of Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms. Throughout his career, Willy received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1963, he was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, and in 1972, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
