He was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a well-known conductor. Palai showed an interest in music from a young age and began playing the piano at the age of four. He later learned to play the violin and the viola. Palai's musical education began at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, where he studied under the guidance of renowned musicians such as Alfredo Casella and Bernardino Molinari. He later continued his studies at the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia in Rome, where he studied composition and conducting. Palai's career as a musician began in the 1940s when he joined the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia as a violist. He quickly rose through the ranks and became the principal violist of the orchestra. He also performed as a soloist with the orchestra, playing works by composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms. In the 1950s, Palai began to focus more on conducting. He conducted the Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma and the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano, among others. He also conducted the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, where he had previously been a violist. Palai's conducting style was known for its precision and clarity, and he was highly regarded by his peers. Palai's career reached new heights in the 1960s when he was appointed the principal conductor of the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano. He held this position for over a decade and led the orchestra in numerous performances and recordings.
