From a young age, McMillan showed a natural talent for music, and he began playing the piano at the age of four. McMillan's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons with renowned pianist and teacher, Maria João Pires, at the age of six. Pires quickly recognized McMillan's potential and became his mentor and guide throughout his musical journey. McMillan's talent continued to grow, and he began performing in public at the age of eight. He made his debut with the London Symphony Orchestra at the age of ten, playing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor. The performance was a huge success, and McMillan received critical acclaim for his virtuosity and musicality. Over the years, McMillan continued to perform with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He also performed at major music festivals, such as the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh International Festival, and the BBC Proms. McMillan's repertoire was vast and included works by some of the greatest composers in history, such as Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Mozart, and Schumann. He was particularly known for his interpretations of Chopin's music, and his performances of Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor and his Ballades were considered some of the best in the world. In addition to his performances, McMillan was also a prolific recording artist. He recorded over 20 albums throughout his career, including complete cycles of the Beethoven and Chopin piano sonatas. His recordings received numerous awards and accolades, including several Gramophone Awards and a Diapason d'Or. McMillan's talent and dedication to music were recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout his career. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 2008 for his services to music, and he was made a Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government in 2015. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Music. Tragically, McMillan's career was cut short when he died suddenly at the age of 35 in 2020. His death was a shock to the music world, and he was mourned by fans and colleagues around the globe.
