Raymond Premru was a British composer and trombonist who was born on August 17, 1934, in London, England. He was the son of a professional musician and grew up in a musical family. His father was a trombonist and his mother was a pianist, and they both encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Premru began playing the trombone at a young age and quickly showed a talent for the instrument. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he received a thorough education in music theory, composition, and performance. He also studied with some of the most renowned trombonists of the time, including Denis Wick and John Iveson. After completing his studies, Premru began his career as a professional musician. He played with some of the most prestigious orchestras in the world, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He also played with many jazz bands and was known for his versatility as a musician. In addition to his work as a performer, Premru was also a prolific composer. He wrote music for a wide range of ensembles, including orchestras, wind bands, brass bands, and jazz bands. His compositions were known for their technical complexity and their ability to showcase the unique qualities of each instrument in the ensemble. One of Premru's most famous works is his Concerto for Bass Trombone and Orchestra. This piece was written in 1976 and is considered one of the most challenging pieces in the bass trombone repertoire. It has been performed by some of the world's most renowned bass trombonists, including Douglas Yeo and Ben van Dijk. Premru also wrote a number of works for wind band, including his Suite for Tuba and Wind Band and his Concerto for Euphonium and Wind Band. These pieces were written for some of the most talented wind musicians of the time and are still performed regularly today. In addition to his work as a composer and performer, Premru was also a respected music educator. He taught at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he inspired a new generation of musicians to pursue careers in music. Premru's contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with a number of awards and honors. He was made a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music in 1984 and was awarded the British Trombone Society's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002. Sadly, Premru passed away on December 10, 1996, at the age of 62. However, his legacy lives on through his music, which continues to be performed and enjoyed by musicians and audiences around the world.
