She studied at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, where she was a student of the renowned violinist and pedagogue, Zoltán Székely. She graduated with honors in 1967 and went on to pursue a career as a soloist. Ilona's career took off quickly, and she began performing in major concert halls around the world. She made her debut in the United States in 1970, performing with the New York Philharmonic under the direction of Leonard Bernstein. She also performed with other major orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. Ilona was known for her virtuosic playing and her ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music she played. She was particularly known for her interpretations of the works of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven.
