The Eos Guitar Quartet is a classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their unique sound and virtuosic performances since their founding in 1995. The quartet is made up of four talented guitarists: Mark Edwards, William Feasley, Scott Borg, and Joel Brown. Each member brings their own distinct style and expertise to the group, resulting in a cohesive and dynamic sound that has earned them critical acclaim and numerous awards. The Eos Guitar Quartet was founded by Mark Edwards, who had previously been a member of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet. Edwards wanted to create a new ensemble that would explore the possibilities of the guitar quartet format and push the boundaries of classical guitar music. He recruited William Feasley, Scott Borg, and Joel Brown, all accomplished guitarists in their own right, to join him in this endeavor. The quartet's name, Eos, is derived from Greek mythology and refers to the goddess of the dawn. The name reflects the quartet's desire to bring new light and energy to the classical guitar repertoire. From the beginning, the Eos Guitar Quartet set out to create a unique sound that would distinguish them from other classical guitar ensembles. They achieved this by incorporating a wide range of musical styles and influences into their performances, including jazz, folk, and world music. They also experimented with different guitar techniques and tunings, creating a rich and varied sonic palette. The quartet's first major performance was at the 1996 Guitar Foundation of America Convention, where they were awarded the prestigious New Music Award. This recognition helped to establish the Eos Guitar Quartet as a rising star in the classical guitar world. Over the years, the quartet has continued to impress audiences and critics alike with their innovative and dynamic performances. They have performed at major venues and festivals around the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Ravinia Festival. They have also collaborated with a wide range of musicians and composers, including jazz guitarist Charlie Byrd and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Jennifer Higdon. One of the quartet's most notable performances was their 2004 concert at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, where they premiered a new work by composer Roberto Sierra. The piece, titled "Fantasia Corelliana," was commissioned by the quartet and showcased their virtuosic playing and innovative approach to classical guitar music. In addition to their performances, the Eos Guitar Quartet has also released several critically acclaimed albums. Their debut album, "Eos," was released in 1998 and featured a mix of classical and contemporary works. Their 2002 album, "Dreams," focused on music inspired by dreams and featured works by composers such as Maurice Ravel and Manuel de Falla. The quartet's most recent album, "The Legend of Hagoromo," was released in 2019 and features a new work by composer Takashi Yoshimatsu. The piece, which is based on a Japanese folktale, showcases the quartet's ability to blend different musical styles and create a unique and captivating sound. Throughout their career, the Eos Guitar Quartet has received numerous awards and accolades for their performances and recordings.
