Alan Heatherington is a renowned classical music artist who has made a significant contribution to the world of music. He was born in 1953 in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up in a family that valued music. His father was a professional musician, and his mother was a music teacher. Heatherington started playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. Heatherington attended the University of Illinois, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance. He then went on to study conducting at the University of Michigan, where he earned a Master of Music degree. During his time at the University of Michigan, Heatherington had the opportunity to work with some of the most renowned conductors in the world, including Leonard Bernstein and Seiji Ozawa. After completing his studies, Heatherington began his career as a conductor. He quickly gained a reputation for his exceptional talent and was soon invited to conduct some of the most prestigious orchestras in the world. In 1981, he was appointed the music director of the Ars Viva Symphony Orchestra in Chicago, a position he held for over 30 years. During his tenure with the Ars Viva Symphony Orchestra, Heatherington led the orchestra in numerous performances and recordings. He also collaborated with some of the most renowned soloists in the world, including Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and Joshua Bell. Heatherington's work with the Ars Viva Symphony Orchestra earned him critical acclaim and numerous awards, including the Illinois Council of Orchestras' Conductor of the Year award. In addition to his work with the Ars Viva Symphony Orchestra, Heatherington has also conducted numerous other orchestras, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. He has also conducted orchestras in Europe, Asia, and South America. Heatherington is also a respected educator and has taught at several universities, including Northwestern University and DePaul University. He has also served as a guest conductor and lecturer at numerous universities and music schools around the world. Throughout his career, Heatherington has been committed to promoting classical music and making it accessible to a wider audience. He has worked with numerous community organizations to bring classical music to underserved communities and has also collaborated with other artists to create innovative and engaging performances. In recognition of his contributions to the world of classical music, Heatherington has received numerous awards and honors. In 2010, he was awarded the prestigious John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts' National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award for his work with the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra. He has also been awarded the Illinois Council of Orchestras' Lifetime Achievement Award and the Chicago Music Awards' Classical Entertainer of the Year award. Today, Heatherington continues to be an active conductor and educator. He is the music director of the Lake Forest Symphony Orchestra and also serves as the artistic director of the Chicago Master Singers. He remains committed to promoting classical music and inspiring the next generation of musicians and music lovers.
