Dominica Eyckmans is a Belgian composer, performer, and sound artist who has made a significant contribution to the world of contemporary classical music. Born in Brussels in 1970, Eyckmans grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from a young age. Her father was a composer and her mother was a pianist, and they encouraged her to pursue her passion for music. Eyckmans began her musical education at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where she studied piano, music theory, and composition. She later went on to study at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, where she received a degree in electroacoustic composition. Throughout her career, Eyckmans has been recognized for her innovative approach to music and her ability to blend different genres and styles. She has collaborated with a wide range of artists, including dancers, visual artists, and filmmakers, and has created works that explore the boundaries between sound, space, and time. One of Eyckmans' most notable works is "L'air du temps," a piece for solo cello and electronics that was commissioned by the Festival Ars Musica in Brussels in 2008. The piece was performed by the cellist Arne Deforce and received critical acclaim for its haunting beauty and innovative use of technology. Eyckmans has also been recognized for her work in the field of sound art. In 2010, she was awarded the Prix Ars Electronica for her installation "Le jardin des délices," which was exhibited at the ZKM Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, Germany. The installation featured a series of soundscapes that were created using field recordings and manipulated sounds. In addition to her work as a composer and sound artist, Eyckmans is also an accomplished performer. She has performed as a pianist and electronic musician in a variety of settings, from solo recitals to large-scale multimedia productions. Eyckmans' music has been performed at festivals and venues around the world, including the Festival d'Automne in Paris, the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival in the UK, and the MATA Festival in New York. Her work has been recorded on several labels, including Sub Rosa, Fuga Libera, and Megadisc Classics. Eyckmans' music is characterized by its use of unconventional sounds and textures, as well as its exploration of the relationship between sound and space. Her compositions often feature extended techniques and unconventional playing methods, and she frequently incorporates electronic and digital elements into her work.
