Born on May 1, 1961, in the town of Grimethorpe, South Yorkshire, England, Childs grew up in a family of musicians. His father, Robert Childs, was a renowned euphonium player and conductor, and his mother, Margaret Childs, was a pianist. From a young age, Childs was exposed to the world of music and began playing the cornet at the age of six. Childs attended the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where he studied under the tutelage of James Watson and Howard Snell. He graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1982 and went on to pursue a career in music. Childs began his career as a professional musician with the Black Dyke Mills Band, one of the most prestigious brass bands in the world. He played the cornet and later the flugelhorn for the band and quickly established himself as a talented musician. In 1986, he was appointed the band's principal cornet player, a position he held for six years. In 1991, Childs was appointed the musical director of the Tredegar Town Band, a position he held for 17 years. Under his leadership, the band won numerous awards and accolades, including the National Championship of Great Britain in 2003 and 2006. Childs also led the band to victory at the European Brass Band Championships in 2003 and 2006. In addition to his work with the Tredegar Town Band, Childs has conducted numerous other brass bands and orchestras around the world. He has worked with the Grimethorpe Colliery Band, the Foden's Band, the Brighouse and Rastrick Band, and the Cory Band, among others. He has also conducted orchestras such as the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Childs is perhaps best known for his work with the Black Dyke Band, which he has conducted since 2000. Under his leadership, the band has won numerous awards and accolades, including the National Championship of Great Britain in 2001, 2004, 2009, 2014, and 2015. The band has also won the European Brass Band Championships in 2005, 2009, and 2015. Childs has also been recognized for his contributions to the world of music. In 2009, he was awarded the prestigious Iles Medal by the Worshipful Company of Musicians in recognition of his outstanding contribution to brass band music.
