Artist Info
Edith van Moergastel was a renowned classical music artist who was born on May 12, 1975, in Amsterdam, Netherlands. She was the youngest of three children born to a family of musicians. Her father was a pianist, and her mother was a violinist. From a young age, Edith showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Edith's parents recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. She began taking piano lessons with her father and later studied at the Amsterdam Conservatory. She also studied with renowned pianists such as Martha Argerich and Vladimir Ashkenazy. In 1995, Edith won the prestigious International Piano Competition in Geneva, Switzerland. This was a significant achievement for her, and it opened many doors for her career. She went on to perform in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Edith was known for her exceptional technique and musicality. She had a deep understanding of the music she played and was able to convey the emotions and nuances of each piece to her audience. Her performances were always highly anticipated, and she received critical acclaim for her interpretations of works by composers such as Beethoven, Chopin, and Rachmaninoff. In addition to her solo performances, Edith also collaborated with other musicians and performed as part of chamber ensembles. She was a member of the Van Baerle Trio, which was formed in 2004 and consisted of Edith on piano, Maria Milstein on violin, and Gideon den Herder on cello. The trio performed extensively throughout Europe and received numerous awards, including the Kersjes Prize in 2011. Edith was also a dedicated teacher and mentor to young musicians. She taught at the Amsterdam Conservatory and was a guest lecturer at many other music schools around the world. She was known for her patience and kindness, and her students admired her for her ability to inspire them to reach their full potential. Tragically, Edith's career was cut short when she was diagnosed with cancer in 2015. Despite her illness, she continued to perform and teach for as long as she was able. She passed away on January 15, 2017, at the age of 41. Edith's legacy lives on through her recordings and the many musicians she inspired.
