Hanns Aldo Schimmerling was a German composer and pianist who was born on August 22, 1924, in Berlin, Germany. He was the son of a Jewish father and a Christian mother, and his family was forced to flee Germany in 1933 due to the rise of the Nazi regime. They settled in Palestine, where Schimmerling began his musical studies. Schimmerling showed an early talent for music, and he began studying piano at the age of six. He continued his studies in Palestine, where he studied with the renowned pianist and composer Paul Ben-Haim. In 1946, Schimmerling moved to the United States to continue his musical education, studying at the Juilliard School in New York City. Schimmerling's early compositions were influenced by the music of his Jewish heritage, as well as by the works of composers such as Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms. He also drew inspiration from the music of the Middle East, incorporating elements of Arabic and Jewish music into his compositions. One of Schimmerling's early works, the Piano Sonata No. 1, was premiered in 1950 by the pianist Leonard Shure. The sonata is a complex and challenging work, with intricate rhythms and harmonies that reflect Schimmerling's interest in Middle Eastern music. In the 1950s and 1960s, Schimmerling became increasingly interested in electronic music, and he began experimenting with tape manipulation and other electronic techniques. He composed several works for tape, including "Electronic Study No. 1" and "Electronic Study No. 2." Schimmerling's most famous work is his opera "The Dybbuk," which was premiered in 1974 at the Israel Festival in Jerusalem. The opera is based on a play by S. Ansky, and tells the story of a young bride possessed by the spirit of her dead lover. The music is haunting and atmospheric, with elements of Jewish folk music and Middle Eastern rhythms. In addition to his work as a composer, Schimmerling was also a respected pianist and teacher. He taught at the Mannes College of Music in New York City, and he performed as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States and Europe. Schimmerling's music is characterized by its complexity and its incorporation of diverse musical influences. His works often combine elements of classical music with folk music and electronic music, creating a unique and innovative sound. Despite his success as a composer and performer, Schimmerling remained humble and dedicated to his craft throughout his life. He died on December 31, 2014, at the age of 90, leaving behind a legacy of innovative and inspiring music.
