Henri Mulet was a French composer and organist who lived from 1878 to 1967. He was born in Paris, France, and showed an early interest in music. He began studying the piano at a young age and later switched to the organ, which would become his primary instrument. Mulet studied at the Paris Conservatory, where he was a student of Alexandre Guilmant, a renowned organist and composer. Mulet was a talented student and won several prizes during his time at the conservatory. After completing his studies, he became an organist at various churches in Paris, including the Church of Saint-Eustache and the Church of Saint-Roch. Mulet's compositions are primarily for the organ, and he is best known for his virtuosic and technically demanding works. His music is characterized by its grandeur, complexity, and use of chromaticism. Mulet was influenced by the French Romantic tradition, as well as the music of J.S. Bach. One of Mulet's most famous works is his "Carillon-Sortie," which is a popular piece for organists to play as a postlude. The piece is characterized by its fast tempo, intricate pedal work, and use of the carillon, a bell-like sound produced by the organ. Another well-known work by Mulet is his "Tu es Petra," which is a setting of the text from Matthew 16:18. The piece is notable for its use of the Gregorian chant melody, which is woven throughout the composition. Mulet's music was well-received during his lifetime, and he was regarded as one of the leading organists and composers of his time. He was also a respected teacher, and many of his students went on to become successful organists and composers in their own right. Despite his success, Mulet's life was not without its challenges. He lived through two world wars, which had a significant impact on his life and career. During World War I, Mulet served in the French army and was wounded in battle. He was also forced to flee Paris during the German occupation in World War II, which disrupted his career and caused him to lose many of his possessions. Despite these challenges, Mulet continued to compose and perform throughout his life. He remained active as an organist and teacher until his death in 1967. Today, his music continues to be performed and admired by organists and music lovers around the world.
