He was born on August 22, 1914, in Berlin, Germany, to a family of musicians. His father, Kurt Wolff, was a well-known musicologist, and his mother, Gertrud Wolff, was a pianist. Ernst showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Ernst's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He received his first formal training in piano from his mother and later studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist and composer, Walter Gieseking. Ernst's exceptional talent and dedication to music earned him a scholarship to the Berlin Conservatory, where he studied piano, composition, and conducting. Ernst's career as a musician began in the 1930s when he started performing in concerts and recitals across Europe. He quickly gained recognition for his exceptional talent and was invited to perform at some of the most prestigious venues in Europe, including the Berlin Philharmonic and the Vienna State Opera. In 1938, Ernst was forced to flee Germany due to the rise of the Nazi regime. He moved to the United States and settled in New York City, where he continued to perform and teach music. He quickly established himself as one of the leading pianists in the United States and was invited to perform with some of the most prominent orchestras in the country, including the New York Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his career as a performer, Ernst was also a dedicated teacher. He taught at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City and was a visiting professor at several universities, including the University of Michigan and the University of California, Los Angeles. In 1964, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his contributions to German culture.
