He was the youngest of three children and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist, and they both encouraged their children to pursue music. Maestri began his musical training at a young age, studying the piano and violin. He showed exceptional talent and was soon recognized as a prodigy. At the age of 10, he made his debut as a soloist with the Milan Symphony Orchestra, performing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor. Maestri continued to study music throughout his teenage years, and in 1943, he enrolled at the Milan Conservatory. He studied under some of the most renowned musicians of the time, including Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli and Carlo Maria Giulini. During this time, he also began to develop his skills as a conductor, and he conducted his first orchestra at the age of 19. After completing his studies at the Milan Conservatory, Maestri began his professional career as a pianist and conductor. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented and versatile musician, and he was soon in demand as a soloist and conductor throughout Europe. One of the highlights of Maestri's early career was his performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, also known as the "Emperor" concerto, with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in 1952. The performance was a huge success, and Maestri was praised for his technical skill and musical interpretation. In the years that followed, Maestri continued to perform and conduct with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He also recorded numerous albums, including a highly acclaimed recording of Chopin's complete works for solo piano. Maestri's talent and dedication to music were recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1963, he was awarded the prestigious Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, and in 1978, he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. He was also a recipient of the Grammy Award for Best Classical Performance in 1982. Despite his success, Maestri remained humble and dedicated to his craft. He continued to perform and conduct well into his 80s, and he was known for his tireless work ethic and attention to detail. He was also a beloved teacher, and he mentored many young musicians throughout his career. Maestri passed away on June 12, 2010, at the age of 85.
