Born in 1971 in New York City, Duckles grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to classical music from a young age. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist, so it was only natural that he would follow in their footsteps. Duckles began playing the cello at the age of six and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied with some of the best teachers in the country, including Harvey Shapiro and Timothy Eddy, and went on to earn a Bachelor of Music degree from the Juilliard School and a Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music.
