Role:EnsembleGenre:ChoralThe Choir of Lincoln College is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Oxford, England. Founded in 1977, the choir has established itself as one of the leading choral groups in the country, known for its exceptional performances of sacred and secular music from the Renaissance to the present day. The choir was founded by Dr. Denis Arnold, a distinguished musicologist and conductor who served as the college's music director from 1968 to 1980. Dr. Arnold was passionate about choral music and believed that a college choir could provide an excellent opportunity for students to develop their musical skills and perform at a high level. Under Dr. Arnold's leadership, the choir quickly gained a reputation for excellence, performing regularly in the college chapel and at other venues throughout Oxford. The choir's repertoire included works by composers such as Tallis, Byrd, Bach, Handel, Mozart, and Britten, as well as contemporary composers such as John Tavener and Arvo Pärt. Over the years, the choir has had many talented members, including several who have gone on to successful careers in music. Notable alumni include the conductor John Eliot Gardiner, the composer Tarik O'Regan, and the tenor Mark Padmore. One of the choir's most significant achievements was its participation in the 1981 BBC television series "The Choir," which followed the choir as they prepared for a performance of Handel's "Messiah." The series was a huge success and helped to raise the choir's profile both in the UK and internationally. Since then, the choir has continued to perform at a high level, both in the UK and abroad. They have toured extensively throughout Europe, North America, and Asia, performing in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and cathedrals. In addition to their concert performances, the choir has also made several acclaimed recordings. Their discography includes recordings of works by Tallis, Byrd, Bach, Handel, Mozart, and Britten, as well as contemporary composers such as James MacMillan and Eric Whitacre. The choir has also been the recipient of numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1998, they were awarded the prestigious Gramophone Award for their recording of Tallis's "Spem in alium." They have also been nominated for several other Gramophone Awards and have won several prizes at the International Choral Festival in Cork, Ireland. Today, the Choir of Lincoln College continues to be a vital part of the college's musical life, performing regularly in the college chapel and at other venues throughout Oxford. They remain committed to their mission of promoting choral music and providing an opportunity for students to develop their musical skills and perform at a high level.More....
