Born on September 6, 1935, in Revere, Massachusetts, Battisti grew up in a musical family. His father was a trumpet player, and his mother was a pianist. Battisti started playing the trumpet at the age of nine and later switched to the French horn. Battisti attended the New England Conservatory of Music, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in French horn performance. He then went on to earn a Master of Music degree in conducting from the Boston University School of Music. During his time at Boston University, Battisti studied with the legendary conductor Leonard Bernstein. Battisti began his career as a music educator, teaching at the high school and college levels. He served as the Director of Bands at the University of Massachusetts Amherst from 1963 to 1992, where he built the program into one of the most respected in the country. He also served as the Director of Bands at the New England Conservatory of Music from 1971 to 1992. In addition to his work as an educator, Battisti is also a prolific composer and arranger. He has written over 100 works for wind ensemble, orchestra, and chamber groups. His compositions have been performed by some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. Battisti is perhaps best known for his work as a conductor.
