He was the second child of Mattie Lou and Lewis Elmer Miller. His father was a farmer and a music enthusiast who played the mandolin and the fiddle. He attended North Platte High School, where he played in the school band and orchestra. After graduating from high school in 1921, Miller enrolled at the University of Colorado in Boulder. He played in various bands and worked as a freelance arranger. In 1928, he joined the Ben Pollack Orchestra as a trombonist and arranger. He stayed with the band for four years and recorded many popular songs, including "My Kinda Love" and "Futuristic Rhythm." In 1934, Miller formed his own band, the Glenn Miller Orchestra. The band's signature sound was a blend of swing and jazz music, which became known as the "Miller sound." The band's first hit song was "Moonlight Serenade," which was released in 1939. The song became a classic and is still popular today. During World War II, Miller joined the United States Army Air Forces and formed the Army Air Forces Band.
