Tomkins Vocal Ensemble is a classical music ensemble based in Budapest, Hungary. The ensemble was founded in 1991 by conductor and musicologist Zoltán Pad, who remains the artistic director of the group to this day. The ensemble is named after the English composer Thomas Tomkins, who lived in the 17th century and is known for his choral music. The Tomkins Vocal Ensemble is made up of 16 professional singers, all of whom are trained in classical music and have extensive experience performing in choirs and ensembles. The ensemble's repertoire includes a wide range of music from the Renaissance to the present day, with a particular focus on the music of Hungary and Eastern Europe. Over the years, the Tomkins Vocal Ensemble has become one of the most respected and acclaimed choral ensembles in Hungary and beyond. The group has performed at major music festivals and concert halls throughout Europe, including the Edinburgh International Festival, the Salzburg Festival, and the Berlin Philharmonic. One of the highlights of the Tomkins Vocal Ensemble's career was their performance at the 2004 World Choral Symposium in Kyoto, Japan. The group was one of only a handful of choirs from around the world to be invited to perform at the prestigious event, which brought together some of the best choral ensembles in the world. In addition to their performances, the Tomkins Vocal Ensemble has also received numerous awards and accolades for their recordings. The group has released several albums, including a critically acclaimed recording of the music of Hungarian composer György Ligeti. The album was awarded the prestigious Diapason d'Or award in France, and was also nominated for a Grammy Award in the United States. The Tomkins Vocal Ensemble has also been recognized for their contributions to the cultural life of Hungary. In 2011, the group was awarded the prestigious Kossuth Prize, which is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon an artist in Hungary. The award recognized the ensemble's outstanding contributions to the promotion and preservation of Hungarian choral music. Despite their many achievements, the Tomkins Vocal Ensemble remains committed to their mission of bringing the beauty and power of choral music to audiences around the world. The group continues to perform regularly, both in Hungary and abroad, and is dedicated to exploring new and innovative ways to share their love of music with others.
