Thomanerchor Leipzig is a world-renowned classical music ensemble that has been in existence for over 800 years. The choir was founded in 1212 by Margrave Theodoric of Meissen, who established the St. Thomas School in Leipzig, Germany. The choir was originally created to provide music for the church services at the St. Thomas Church, which was the main church in Leipzig at the time. Over the years, the Thomanerchor Leipzig has become one of the most prestigious and respected choirs in the world. The choir has performed in some of the most famous concert halls and churches in Europe, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, and St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. The choir has had many notable members over the years, including Johann Sebastian Bach, who served as the choir's music director from 1723 to 1750. Bach composed many of his most famous works for the choir, including the St. Matthew Passion and the Christmas Oratorio. Other notable members of the choir include Felix Mendelssohn, who served as the choir's music director from 1835 to 1847. Mendelssohn is credited with reviving interest in Bach's music and bringing the Thomanerchor Leipzig to international prominence. In addition to Bach and Mendelssohn, the choir has had many other famous members over the years, including Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, and Gustav Mahler. The Thomanerchor Leipzig has performed many notable works over the years, including Bach's Mass in B Minor, Mendelssohn's Elijah, and Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem. The choir has also performed many contemporary works, including pieces by Arvo Pärt and John Tavener. The choir has won many awards and accolades over the years, including the Echo Klassik Award for Best Choral Recording in 2011. The choir has also been featured in many films and television programs, including the documentary film "Bach & Friends" and the BBC series "Sacred Music." Today, the Thomanerchor Leipzig continues to be one of the most respected and prestigious choirs in the world. The choir is made up of around 90 boys between the ages of 9 and 18, who attend the St. Thomas School and receive a rigorous musical education. The choir performs regularly at the St. Thomas Church and on tour around the world, and continues to inspire audiences with its beautiful and powerful music.
