He was born on September 28, 1951, in Leningrad, Soviet Union (now St. Petersburg, Russia). Roldugin grew up in a family of musicians, and his father was a well-known conductor. He started playing the cello at the age of six and quickly showed exceptional talent. Roldugin studied at the Leningrad Conservatory, where he was a student of the legendary cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. He graduated with honors in 1974 and went on to become a soloist with the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra. He quickly gained recognition for his virtuosity and musicality, and his performances were praised by critics and audiences alike. In 1980, Roldugin won the prestigious Tchaikovsky Competition, one of the most prestigious music competitions in the world.
