Alberto Ponce was a renowned classical guitarist and music educator who was born on May 4, 1935, in Oran, Algeria. He was the son of Spanish parents who had migrated to Algeria. Ponce's father was a music lover and had a vast collection of classical music recordings, which inspired Ponce to pursue a career in music. Ponce began his musical training at a young age, studying piano and violin. However, he soon discovered his passion for the guitar and began taking lessons from the Spanish guitarist, Emilio Pujol. Pujol was a significant influence on Ponce's musical style and approach to the guitar. In 1955, Ponce moved to Paris to study at the École Normale de Musique de Paris, where he studied under the tutelage of the renowned guitarist, Alexandre Lagoya. Ponce's time in Paris was a significant turning point in his career, as he was exposed to a wide range of musical styles and began to develop his unique approach to the guitar. Ponce's career as a performer began in the 1960s, and he quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented and innovative classical guitarists of his generation. He performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and the Americas, and his concerts were always well-received by audiences and critics alike. One of the highlights of Ponce's career was his performance at the 1975 International Guitar Festival in Cordoba, Spain. Ponce's performance was a tour de force, and he received a standing ovation from the audience. The performance was later released as a live album, which became one of Ponce's most popular recordings. Ponce was also a prolific recording artist, and he released over 30 albums throughout his career. His recordings were highly regarded for their technical virtuosity and musical sensitivity, and they helped to establish him as one of the most important classical guitarists of the 20th century. In addition to his career as a performer, Ponce was also a dedicated music educator. He taught at the École Normale de Musique de Paris for over 30 years, and he also taught at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris. Ponce's teaching was highly influential, and many of his students went on to become successful performers and educators in their own right. Ponce's contributions to the world of classical guitar were recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1989, he was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for his recording of the complete works of Manuel Ponce. He was also awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in 1991. Despite his many accomplishments, Ponce remained humble and dedicated to his craft throughout his life. He continued to perform and teach until his death on July 27, 2019, at the age of 84. His legacy as one of the greatest classical guitarists of all time lives on through his recordings, his students, and the countless musicians who have been inspired by his music.
