Born on February 18, 1932, in Brooklyn, New York, Sant'Ambrogio grew up in a family of musicians. His father, John Sant'Ambrogio Sr., was a violinist, and his mother, Mary Sant'Ambrogio, was a pianist. From a young age, Sant'Ambrogio was exposed to music and began playing the cello at the age of six. Sant'Ambrogio's talent was evident from an early age, and he quickly became a sought-after performer. He studied at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he was a student of Leonard Rose. After completing his studies, Sant'Ambrogio began his professional career as a cellist, performing with various orchestras and ensembles. One of Sant'Ambrogio's most significant accomplishments was his tenure as the principal cellist of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra. He held this position for over 30 years, from 1968 to 1999. During his time with the orchestra, Sant'Ambrogio was known for his virtuosic playing and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music. He was also a beloved member of the orchestra, known for his warm personality and his dedication to his craft. His virtuosic playing and his dedication to his craft have left an indelible mark on the world of classical music.
