Born on December 3, 1950, in Paris, France, Gamard showed an early interest in music and began playing the cello at the age of six. He studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, where he was a student of André Navarra, one of the most prominent cellists of the 20th century. Gamard's talent and dedication to music were evident from an early age, and he quickly established himself as a rising star in the classical music world. He won several prestigious awards and competitions, including the Grand Prix du Concours International de Violoncelle Rostropovitch in 1977, which helped to launch his career as a soloist.
