Thomas Brandis was a renowned classical music artist who was born on February 17, 1935, in Hamburg, Germany. He was a violinist and conductor who made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Brandis was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a violinist in the Hamburg State Opera. He began playing the violin at the age of six and showed exceptional talent from an early age. Brandis studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg, where he was a student of the renowned violinist and pedagogue, Max Rostal. He also studied with Wolfgang Schneiderhan in Switzerland and with David Oistrakh in Moscow. Brandis was a member of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra from 1956 to 1983, where he served as the concertmaster from 1962 to 1983. He was also a professor of violin at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin from 1983 to 2000. Brandis was known for his exceptional technique and musicality, and he was highly regarded as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player. He performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Vienna Philharmonic. He also collaborated with many of the world's leading conductors, including Herbert von Karajan, Leonard Bernstein, and Claudio Abbado. One of the highlights of Brandis's career was his performance of the Beethoven Violin Concerto with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Herbert von Karajan in 1969.
