His father was a church musician, and his mother was a singer. Uusitalo started singing in choirs at a young age and began taking voice lessons when he was 18 years old. Uusitalo studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where he received his diploma in 1986. He then continued his studies in Vienna with the renowned bass-baritone Walter Berry.
