The quartet was founded in 1978 by four talented musicians who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to create a unique sound that would set them apart from other ensembles. The founding members of the English String Quartet were violinists Ralph de Souza and Norman George, violist Stephen Tees, and cellist Peter Adams. All four musicians had extensive experience playing in various orchestras and chamber groups before coming together to form the quartet. Their shared love for the string quartet repertoire and their commitment to excellence quickly established them as one of the most exciting new ensembles on the classical music scene. The English String Quartet's early performances were met with critical acclaim, and they soon began to receive invitations to perform at major music festivals and concert halls around the world. One of their most notable early performances was at the 1980 Edinburgh International Festival, where they received a standing ovation for their rendition of Beethoven's String Quartet No. 14 in C-sharp minor, Op. 131. Over the years, the English String Quartet has become known for their exceptional interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Haydn, Mozart, and other classical composers. They have also commissioned and premiered new works by contemporary composers, including John Tavener, Michael Berkeley, and James MacMillan. The quartet has undergone some changes in membership over the years, but their commitment to excellence and their unique sound has remained constant. Violinist Ralph de Souza retired from the quartet in 2006, and was replaced by Simon Blendis. The current members of the English String Quartet are Norman George and Simon Blendis on violin, Stephen Tees on viola, and Adrian Bradbury on cello. The English String Quartet has received numerous awards and accolades throughout their career. In 1985, they were awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society's Chamber Ensemble Award, and in 1990 they were awarded the Gramophone Award for Best Chamber Music Recording for their recording of Beethoven's String Quartets Op. 18, Nos. 1-6. They have also been nominated for several other Gramophone Awards and have received critical acclaim for their recordings of the complete string quartets of Haydn and Mozart. In addition to their recordings, the English String Quartet has performed at some of the world's most prestigious music festivals and concert halls, including the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh International Festival, the BBC Proms, and Carnegie Hall. They have collaborated with some of the world's most renowned musicians, including pianist Alfred Brendel, cellist Steven Isserlis, and violinist Joshua Bell. One of the English String Quartet's most memorable performances was their 2008 performance of Beethoven's String Quartet No. 13 in B-flat major, Op. 130, at the Wigmore Hall in London. The quartet's interpretation of the work was praised for its emotional depth and technical precision, and the performance received a standing ovation from the audience. Throughout their career, the English String Quartet has remained committed to their mission of bringing the beauty and complexity of chamber music to audiences around the world.More....
