Born on May 22, 1979, in Zurich, Switzerland, Wernli showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. Her parents, both music lovers, recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue her passion. Wernli's musical education began at the Zurich Conservatory, where she studied piano under the tutelage of renowned pianist and pedagogue, Homero Francesch. She later went on to study at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hanover, Germany, where she received her diploma in piano performance. During her time in Hanover, Wernli also studied composition with the composer and conductor, Manfred Trojahn. Her performances were praised for their technical precision, musicality, and emotional depth. In 2003, she won the prestigious Clara Haskil International Piano Competition in Switzerland, which helped to establish her as one of the leading pianists of her generation.
