The Österreichisches ensemble für neue musik, also known as the Austrian Ensemble for New Music, is a classical music ensemble based in Austria. The ensemble was founded in 1984 by a group of young musicians who were passionate about contemporary music and wanted to promote it in Austria and beyond. The founding members of the ensemble were Wolfgang Hattinger, Gerhard Präsent, and Wolfgang Seierl. They were later joined by other musicians, including Ernst Kovacic, Peter Burwik, and Reinhard Fuchs. The ensemble's main focus is on contemporary classical music, and they have commissioned and premiered many new works by Austrian and international composers. Over the years, the ensemble has performed at many prestigious venues and festivals around the world, including the Salzburg Festival, the Vienna Festival, the Berliner Festwochen, and the Venice Biennale. They have also collaborated with many renowned conductors and soloists, including Pierre Boulez, Peter Eötvös, and Heinz Holliger. One of the highlights of the ensemble's career was their performance of György Ligeti's opera "Le Grand Macabre" at the Salzburg Festival in 1997. The production was directed by Peter Sellars and conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen, and it received critical acclaim for its innovative staging and musical interpretation. The ensemble has also received many awards and accolades for their work, including the Austrian State Prize for Music in 1995 and the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize in 2003. They have also recorded many albums of contemporary classical music, including works by Ligeti, Boulez, and Karlheinz Stockhausen. Today, the Österreichisches ensemble für neue musik continues to be a leading force in the world of contemporary classical music. They are dedicated to promoting new works by emerging composers and pushing the boundaries of what is possible in classical music performance.More....
