Private Musicke is a classical music ensemble that specializes in performing early music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The ensemble was founded in 1994 by Pierre Pitzl, a German lutenist and conductor, and has since become one of the most respected and acclaimed early music ensembles in the world. Pitzl, who studied at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Switzerland, had a vision of creating an ensemble that would explore the rich and diverse repertoire of early music, and bring it to life for modern audiences. He assembled a group of talented musicians from across Europe, including singers, instrumentalists, and dancers, who shared his passion for this music. The ensemble's name, Private Musicke, is taken from a collection of lute music by the English composer Robert Dowland, which was published in 1610. The name reflects the intimate and personal nature of the music that the ensemble performs, which was often written for small groups of musicians and intended for private performances in the homes of wealthy patrons. Private Musicke's repertoire includes music from the 14th to the 18th centuries, with a particular focus on the music of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The ensemble performs on a wide range of instruments, including lutes, viols, harpsichords, recorders, and percussion, and often incorporates dance and theater into their performances. One of the highlights of Private Musicke's career was their performance at the 1996 Utrecht Early Music Festival in the Netherlands. The festival is one of the most prestigious early music events in the world, and Private Musicke's performance was widely praised for its virtuosity, sensitivity, and musicality. The ensemble's performance of music by the Italian composer Claudio Monteverdi was particularly acclaimed, and helped to establish Private Musicke as a leading interpreter of Monteverdi's music. Private Musicke has also performed at many other major early music festivals and venues around the world, including the Boston Early Music Festival, the Festival Oude Muziek in Utrecht, the Tage Alter Musik in Regensburg, and the Wigmore Hall in London. The ensemble has collaborated with many of the leading early music performers and ensembles of our time, including Jordi Savall, Emma Kirkby, and the Hilliard Ensemble. In addition to their live performances, Private Musicke has also recorded extensively, with over a dozen albums to their name. Their recordings have been widely praised for their musicality, authenticity, and sensitivity to the nuances of early music performance. Some of their most acclaimed recordings include their interpretations of Monteverdi's madrigals, Dowland's lute music, and the music of the French Baroque composer Jean-Philippe Rameau. Private Musicke has received numerous awards and accolades for their performances and recordings. In 1998, they were awarded the prestigious Diapason d'Or award for their recording of Monteverdi's madrigals, and in 2002 they received the Echo Klassik award for their recording of Rameau's Les Indes Galantes. The ensemble has also been nominated for several Grammy Awards, and has won the German Record Critics' Award multiple times. Despite their many achievements, Private Musicke remains committed to their original vision of exploring and sharing the rich and diverse repertoire of early music.
