He was the youngest of three children born to his parents, who were both musicians. His father was a pianist, and his mother was a violinist. From a young age, Jan showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Jan's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons at the age of six and quickly progressed. By the time he was ten years old, he had already won several local piano competitions. Jan continued to study music throughout his teenage years and attended the Amsterdam Conservatory, where he studied under the renowned pianist and composer, Jan Wijn. He graduated with honors in 1972 and began his professional career as a concert pianist. Jan's talent as a pianist quickly gained recognition, and he began performing in major concert halls throughout Europe. In 1974, he made his debut at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, one of the most prestigious concert halls in the world. The performance was a huge success, and Jan received critical acclaim for his virtuosity and musicality. Over the next few years, Jan continued to perform in major concert halls throughout Europe, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Musikverein in Vienna, and the Philharmonie de Paris. He also performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. Jan's repertoire was extensive, and he was known for his interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Chopin, and Liszt. He was also a champion of contemporary music and premiered several works by Dutch composers. In addition to his concert career, Jan was also a respected teacher. He taught at the Amsterdam Conservatory for many years and was known for his dedication to his students. Many of his students went on to have successful careers as pianists. Throughout his career, Jan received numerous awards and honors. In 1982, he was awarded the Order of Orange-Nassau, one of the highest honors in the Netherlands. He was also awarded the Prix d'Excellence by the Amsterdam Conservatory in recognition of his outstanding achievements as a pianist and teacher. Jan continued to perform and teach until his death in 2005 at the age of 55.
