York2 is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2009 by two talented musicians, Jennifer Choi and Hwayoon Lee. The ensemble is known for its unique blend of classical and contemporary music, and has gained a reputation for its innovative and dynamic performances. Jennifer Choi, a violinist, and Hwayoon Lee, a violist, met while studying at The Juilliard School in New York City. They quickly discovered a shared passion for chamber music and decided to form their own ensemble. They named the group York2, after the street where they first rehearsed together. The ensemble's main members are Jennifer Choi on violin, Hwayoon Lee on viola, and pianist Wei-Yi Yang. All three musicians are highly accomplished and have received numerous awards and accolades for their performances. Jennifer Choi has performed as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra. She has also won several prestigious awards, including the Avery Fisher Career Grant and the Salon de Virtuosi Career Grant. Hwayoon Lee has also established herself as a highly sought-after musician, performing as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic and the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. She has won several awards, including the prestigious Primrose International Viola Competition. Wei-Yi Yang is a renowned pianist who has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also won several awards, including the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition. Since its founding, York2 has performed at many of the world's leading concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center. The ensemble has also been featured on numerous radio and television programs, including NPR's "Performance Today" and WQXR's "Young Artists Showcase." One of the highlights of York2's career was their performance at the 2012 Chamber Music America Conference, where they were awarded the prestigious ASCAP/CMA Adventurous Programming Award. The award recognized the ensemble's innovative programming, which included a mix of classical and contemporary music. Another notable performance by York2 was their collaboration with the renowned choreographer Mark Morris. The ensemble provided live music for Morris's dance piece "A Wooden Tree," which premiered at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 2012. In addition to their performances, York2 is also committed to music education.
