He was the youngest of six siblings and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. His father was a skilled violinist, and his mother was a talented singer. From a young age, Bernardo showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. Bernardo's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons from a local teacher and quickly progressed. At the age of 12, he gave his first public performance, which was well-received by the audience. This experience further fueled his passion for music, and he began to dream of becoming a professional musician. In 1936, Bernardo moved to Rome to study music at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. He studied under some of the most renowned music teachers of the time, including Alfredo Casella and Carlo Zecchi. During his time at the academy, Bernardo honed his skills and developed a deep understanding of classical music. After completing his studies, Bernardo began performing in concerts across Italy. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented pianist and was invited to perform at some of the most prestigious music festivals in the country. In 1948, he won the prestigious Busoni Prize, which was awarded to the best pianist under the age of 35. Bernardo's career continued to flourish, and he began to receive invitations to perform in concerts across Europe. In 1952, he made his debut at the Royal Festival Hall in London, where he received a standing ovation from the audience. Over the years, Bernardo performed with some of the most renowned orchestras in the world, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He also collaborated with some of the most celebrated conductors of the time, including Herbert von Karajan, Leonard Bernstein, and Claudio Abbado.
