Born on October 27, 1956, in Vienna, Austria, Höbarth grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a cellist, and his mother was a pianist, which exposed him to music at an early age. Höbarth began playing the violin at the age of six and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied at the Vienna Music Academy with Franz Samohyl and later with Nathan Milstein in Switzerland. He also received guidance from the legendary violinist Yehudi Menuhin, who recognized his potential and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. In 1979, Höbarth became a member of the Concentus Musicus Wien, a renowned early music ensemble founded by Nikolaus Harnoncourt. He played with the group for over a decade, performing in concerts and recordings of Baroque and Classical music. During this time, he also collaborated with other prominent musicians, including Gustav Leonhardt, Ton Koopman, and Christopher Hogwood. In 1990, Höbarth founded his own ensemble, the Quatuor Mosaïques, which specializes in performing music from the Classical and Romantic periods on period instruments. The group has gained international recognition for its innovative interpretations and has performed in major concert halls around the world, including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Wigmore Hall in London, and the Lincoln Center in New York. As a soloist, Höbarth has performed with many leading orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the English Chamber Orchestra. He has also recorded extensively, with over 100 albums to his credit, including recordings of Mozart's violin concertos, Beethoven's violin sonatas, and Schubert's chamber music. Höbarth has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, the Mozart Interpretation Prize, and the Diapason d'Or. He has also been a professor of violin at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg since 1999, where he has mentored many young musicians. In addition to his work as a performer and teacher, Höbarth is also a conductor. He has led many orchestras, including the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. He is known for his insightful interpretations and his ability to bring out the best in his musicians. Overall, Erich Höbarth is a highly respected and accomplished musician who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music.
