Born in 1958 in Texas, Bruffy grew up in a musical family and began singing in choirs at a young age. He attended Texas Tech University, where he earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree in 1980. He later went on to earn a Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance. Bruffy's career as a conductor began in the early 1980s when he became the conductor of the Kansas City Chorale. Under his leadership, the choir quickly gained recognition for its exceptional performances and innovative programming. In 1988, Bruffy founded the Phoenix Chorale, which he led for over 20 years. During his tenure, the choir won numerous awards, including two Grammy Awards for Best Choral Performance in 2009 and 2012. In addition to his work with the Kansas City Chorale and Phoenix Chorale, Bruffy has conducted many other choirs and orchestras throughout his career. He has served as the conductor of the Kansas City Symphony Chorus, the Kansas City Chamber Orchestra, and the Kansas City Ballet. He has also conducted the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the National Symphony Orchestra.
